It's becoming apparent that many people are confusing a "smokey" look with something it really isnt. It seems as though everyone has their own perception of what a true smokey eye really is.
A true smokey eye has any colored lid (usually dark), that extends into the crease, as well as under the eye. A smokey eye is NOT a lighter lid, with a deeper crease. That is simply a basic standard way to place shadows.
"smokey" is a technique, and not just the fact that you're using darker shades. I know many of you will disagree with me. *shrugs*, this is just the way I was taught by some of the industry's best professionals.
Some pics to help:
all the pictures on the right hand side are pictures that the girls who created the look mislabeled as "smokey"
*please note* i am NOT claiming these pictures as my own work. I am simply using them as references, examples, and for education. All the images are from other bloggers, and are all beautifully done.*

...smokey... ...not smokey...

as I mentioned earlier, putting a darker color in the crease is just standard shadow placement! Please don't get it confused with smokey
Hope this helped!
